Antlers

Maybe it's the snow that blankets my property, the forcast of more to come, or the deer that made it's way across my yard just before dawn this morning, but I have been thinking about antlers.  Specifically, the role they have played in design over the years.  Once reserved only for boastful trophy rooms or proud displays in masculine libraries complete with tales told around a crackling fire of hunting trips, they have now made their way into every room of our homes.  And to great effect.  They add sculpture and dimension to walls, rustic ambience to tables and mantles and a cozy lodge feeling when combined with plaids.  I think this is one trend that is here to stay for quite awhile.

  1. If anyone has/saw a photo from a recent publication showing antlers in a kitchen I believe over a range hood, please let me know. It also had a beautiful curved banquette! I know I had the picture somewhere and spent hours to no avail trying to find it!

  10. I too love antlers too. I had a post (almost) all prepared on how I can't get enough antlers, but you have done it to such great effect, I think I will just have to come here to visit them instead! Thanks!

  11. My first visit to your site and you post on one of my favorite topics. I was way ahead of the trend falling in love with antlers on my first trip to France and Germany many years ago and have liberally used them in my decor ever since. After enduring many a raised eyebrow, I am thrilled to finally have some company on this one. Thanks for visiting my site and I am so happy your comment led me here. I will return!

  12. When we lived in colorado, I REAAALLLY wanted an antler chandelier. Just doesn't work here...we don't even have deer!

But I do admire them...particularly that wooden one in the kitchen with the vintage stove...yum!

  14. I'm an antler fan too!!
I once saw them just strewn across a table with gigantic crystals hanging randomly on them and it was breathtaking! I'm always on the lookout for them to add to my collection.
    Have a great weekend!!

  18. What a great post! I agree - with you. I think of them as sculpture. I especially like the one in the chocolate brown study, hanging over that beautiful mirror

  19. Interesting things those antlers! Not sure of how to use them here by the beach. I actually saw a real stuffed bear the other day in an Antique mall. I'll probably buy that instead.....kidding : )

  21. It is interesting how hip antlers have become in home decor, especially since the general sentiment has veered away from so many animal by-products like fur. I'm not generally a huge fan, though I'll admit I like antlers (alone -- not a fan of Bambi's head on a wall!) in certain contexts. They add a lot of character and drama to a room.

  22. Love these images! So rustic and chic. I recently saw a fabric- I think it was Lee Jofa- with antlers against a solid background. I loved it!! xoRH

  24. I loved reading all the varying comments on this post. I do realize and can truly appreciate that these are definately not for everyone.

Maria, I certainly understand and respect your perspective! :) And, it's interesting to note that when my sister first saw these she said "You are the last person I would ever expect to have these hanging up!" Her comment was related to the fact that I am an animal lover as well as a bit of a germaphobe. I could not have an actual deer head hanging up looking at me. But, many of these are found in the woods as part of nature and life taking it's course. And, many are great porcelain reproductions.

Nest egg, I too have seen the Lee Jofa fabric...and I am seeing so many more examples of antlers that I think are fantastic. I will likely do another post down the road. Maria cover your eyes! :)

This was such a fun post, thank you to all to stopped by to comment!

  25. Love this post. We just bought a piece of property in the mountains. (I live at the beach right now) The antlers are perfect for the home we plan to build there.
I agree with you, the deer shed the antlers every year and they can be found as you walk thru the woods. No different than picking up pine cones. I love seeing them piled in baskets or as a table center piece mixed with natural greens. I will be keeping some of these pics for my wish file,

  26. I love this post. Antlers are definitely a part of my decor. But, antlers have always been in my life. Growing up in Oregon--My Dad hunted deer (sorry). I remember antlers here and there, even in the garden as decor. Weird huh...I currently love the little roe deer antlers from Germany. I get some crap for having them on my wall, but the way I look at it: I didn't kill the deer and it is almost a hundred years old.
I love your antlers in the bathroom and over the fireplace.

  27. I don't know the name of the fabric Amanda Nisbet used but I wish I did! She also used it in a showhouse for porch curtains (but in a chocolate/white colorway). I'll let you know if I come across the source though!

  29. Love antlers, kudu horns, peacock feathers, porcupine quills... not all in the same room though. Lots of these pictures remind me of the decorating style found in Tulsa,OK, by the lights of Charles Faudree. I might just have to write a post on this. I have been seeing your blog linked to a lot of my favorite sites. Will add you to mine. :)

  31. I am a fan of antlers, too. I have several of the roe deer antler trophies in my home. Most of them I find on ebay from an antiques dealer in Austria. Reasonably priced and then the shipping which is higher coming from Europe.
