I especially like to do this with accent lighting. It provides flexibility on a moments notice by allowing me to move the lamps from room to room, season to season. This also works very well for sconces and chandelier shades. Granted with table lamps price and storage could be an issue, but a simple linen or silk drum shade will give you a beautiful, additional alternative to almost any base. Just make sure the shade is in proportion to the base.
For a low cost option consider the possibilities of 2 candlestick lamps dressed in 4 shades. This provides 8 different looks that helps avoid needing something new!!! I have a pair of everything shown, but sometimes only one is needed depending on where it is being located. These lamps have been used on mantels, dressers, bookcases, butlers pantry, buffet, secretary and even the back of the powder room toilet!
Ugh! I love the last one. That plum shade and black candlestick I need it in my living room, love it! I'm a lamp snob, I love lamps like some women love shoes!
ReplyDeleteI love the purple with the silver base, but I think the silver with the black shade came together.
ReplyDeleteI had to go back to the red! I have a red coach would be perfect next to. Red and silver looks so Hollywood.
ReplyDeleteI think I like the silver with the black best...did they come as a set?
ReplyDeleteI love the silver candlestick lamp - adorable. But I'm conflicted on shades. Love the shape of the red and black, love the drama of the black but I love the color of the sand shade and I think it goes so well with the candlestick. I would probably do the black shade and silver candlestick bc I love the mix of traditional and streamlined but I suspect the silver candlestick lamp was purchased with the sand colored fluted shade. Just a hunch. Marija
ReplyDeleteOh this is so fun!!! I will have to provide you all with the details later....
ReplyDeleteMy favortie is the silver with the black or the red. The black with the linen colored bell shade. Good post and you are so right, I change my shades from Black for winter to white or linen for summer. Great post,Kathysue
ReplyDeletefun post!
ReplyDeletedoes anyone know of any good shade manufacturers with reasonable prices? :-)
have looked for ages......and you are so right, the shade can make all the difference!

Silver with black shade; black with mulberry shade. I have a pair of black lamps like that currently with tan shades - they're so much more fun seeing them with funky shades.
ReplyDeleteI like the silver candlestick with the gray shade and the silver with the purple damask print.
ReplyDeleteI love the all black, or the silver with the printed shade.
ReplyDeleteYears ago, I bought some black shades on brass lamps and love them.
There is something dramatic about a color used on a shade.

I have just put black shades on silver bases which I love - they had fabulous hot pink linen before but it just wasn't me! Leigh
ReplyDeleteOk, here is the truth....
ReplyDeleteThe silver candlestick lamp and red linen shade were purchased together and are from Restoration Hardware. However, these lamps often wear the black shades which were a $5 clearance item from Drexel Heritage!
The black candlestick lamp which appears to be wood, is actually a $10 metal lamp from Ikea!!! And, I originally purchased the pair to accommodate the purple oval damask shades. They were a pricy little find from Laura Ashley years ago.
The taupe silk shades are from sconces, and I use them whenever I want to lighten things up a bit.
I loved hearing all your guesses and favorite combinations!
The silver candlestick lamp with the black shade is my favorite. Classic, clean, but a tad dramatic! Fun post!
ReplyDeleteOops! The red shade is silk not linen and I don't recall what the RH items cost! If anyone has these or knows, please pass it on...
ReplyDeleteThanks!
That's such a wonderful idea to keep things fresh and seasonal. It seems I'm always in need of a lamp shade but have the hardest time finding them. I have a lamp riding around with me in the car...just waiting for me to find her a shade! Where do you find most of yours? Trina
