Weekend Project: Pantry

The pantry has been an annoyance ever since we have owned our house. The entire kitchen has been renovated and I ignored the pantry. Shameful, I know! So...nearly 18 years later, we are finally going to fix it. I don't know about you, but I especially loathe vented shelving in a pantry (except the metal racks for dishes and/or small appliances if you're lucky enough to have a big walk-in pantry) as well as for linen closets. In the 90's it was all the rage to install them. The building industry wanted consumers to buy into the concept that things needed to be vented, when actually they just wanted to provide the cheapest product possible. If your house is properly ventilated, this is nonsense for clothes and linens. And, venting food? C'mon???!!!

Step1: clear out all the food items, toss away what was expired and what nobody seemed to like?
Step 2: put all shelves at the curb for trash/recycle, so there is no putting it off yet another year!

Never again will I have to deal with things tipping over and falling through the slats,
including crumbs that always seem to find their way to lids of cans!
 Step 3: spackle holes
Step 4: sand

The original tan paint. Not my selection and not exactly the best color choice for a small box!
That's as far as we got. I'll be spending the weekend with my husband....in this little closet. How about you?

  3. Hello:
You obviously have something of a job in hand, but just think how delighted you will be when the pantry is finished and order resumed. In many modern houses, or so it would seem, there is no provision for a pantry at all. Here we are fortunate for we have what is called a 'kamara', in effect a small room which was built for the purpose of a pantry. But that was in 1870!!

    Kellemes hétvégét.

  4. You will feel so productive in a few days when your pantry is all organized. I agree on vented shelves, we have regular shelves in our pantry and I can't imagine the mess if I didn't as I tend to ignore it's organizing to the very last (which is this month). Have fun and enjoy spending time together in close quarters. XO

  5. What a great project for a weekend and you'll be so much happier without those wire shelves. It's raining here so I'm going to play in my studio today finish the annex with the husbands help and just relax. Enjoy!

  6. The "vented" shelves are annoying, at best. They were installed by the builder of my condo in Florida. My solution was to purchase plastic shelf lining, especially made for this type of shelving. Simply cut and place on top. No more drop throughs!

  9. I love an organized pantry- one of my favorite little rooms!! I have wood shelving for the very reason you state - so annoyed have things tip and fall through the cracks!! Can't wait to see yours when it's done!!

  10. I am excited to share my wall which is a cupboard pantry. Built in bottom drawers, top pull-out rolling shelves, soft close - all a dream!
Just wish you lived a little closer to assist me in stocking it from a to z.
Good luck with your pantry and show us the results of your weekend.

  12. I'm actually doing the same project! Mine is a walk-in and I took out a shelf to make a message center. It works great, but now I'm going to take out all of those annoying shelves and replace them. Thinking about wallpapering the whole thing too. You can see it here... http://tabbodesign.blogspot.com
I don't have much time to blog but I put a picture of it up there today.

  14. I hear you Rebecca...BIG TIME. My pantry has the same horrible shelving EXCEPT someone at least had the foresight to put acrylic pieces cut to fit over each shelf. I painted it semi-gloss white before we moved in so I could scrub it down! I need to do what you are doing and take everything out! Can't wait to see what you do!

  15. I have a legacy of three closets with those hateful wire shelves. The worst is the linen closet where I store bottles that stay "out of sight". Something is always toppling. I can imagine it was a booger for a pantry. I hope it is a fun weekend.

  16. oh, you are going to be so happy with the new shelves and pantry! In our last house the pantry had u-shaped shelves and I was always amazed at how much I could get on them!

    have fun and good luck!

  17. How exciting...and 18 years in the making, your new pantry is going to be just great, especially minus the vents! I've always loved pantries, but for some reason one didn't make it into 24C, just a large double cabinet with a roll out shelf. We will have some pantry shelves in the garage eventually, along with a microwave (which we don't have at the moment and really never use), for some of the larger items...not very glamorous I know, but it's a tight little house.
I look forward to seeing the results...I'm sure it's coming along wonderfully...best of luck!

  18. Hi all,
Thanks so much for the comments, especially those who are dealing with the same crap...misery loves company!!! The studs were not in the ideal location, so plan B had to be considered, then we went out of town. Should have it wrapped up soon...

  19. Sounds fun!!! I did this project last year and decided to paint the inside of mine a soft blue, strictly because it is a color I enjoy seeing and why not!? It is only seen when the door is open otherwise it is our little secret. Enjoy, Kathysue
